Central New Jersey Senior Care Company Assists Wartime Veterans and Their Surviving Spouses

When a family arrives at a point where they need to secure in-home care services for an aging loved one, one of their biggest concerns is how they will pay for these necessary services. While some individuals do have long-term care insurance and others qualify for Medicaid, the majority of recipients receiving in-home care services pay privately. Most veterans and their surviving spouses are not aware of the VA Aid and Attendance Pension, which will provide financial assistance to those who lack the necessary funds to meet their medical needs.
According to census data from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, there are 295,818 veterans age 65 or older living in New Jersey. Thousands of veterans and their surviving spouses may qualify for financial assistance through the program, but they don?t even know that the program exists. The VA Aid and Attendance Pension provides financial assistance to veterans and their surviving spouses, who lack the funds to secure necessary medical services. These medical services include, but are not limited to, supplemental health insurance, prescription medications, medical co-pays, durable medical equipment, and in-home care services such as meal preparation, bathing, dressing and medication reminders.
Basic eligibility for the Aid and Attendance Pension is that a veteran must have served 90 days of active duty with at least one of those days being during a time of war. There are additional medical and financial considerations. According to Abramowitz, ?Home Care Assistance will assist any client in determining per-qualification for the benefit.?
Once a veteran or surviving spouse is approved for the pension, the pension is paid directly to the recipient. The pension is retroactive to the first day of the month following receipt of the application by the VA. This is especially important considering that it can take the VA anywhere from 6-9 months to process and approve an application.
